Employees’ State Insurance Scheme (ESIS)

The Employees’ State Insurance Scheme (ESIS) is a social security scheme in India that provides benefits to employees in case of sickness, maternity, disablement, death, and old age. The scheme is administered by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), which is a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.

The ESIS was first introduced in 1948 and is one of the oldest social security schemes in India. The scheme is applicable to all non-seasonal factories employing 10 or more persons, as well as to certain other establishments such as shops, hotels, road transport undertakings, and educational institutions.

The ESIS is financed by contributions from employers and employees. The rate of contribution by employer is 4.75% of the wages payable to employees. The employees’ contribution is at the rate of 1.75% of the wages payable to an employee.

The ESIS provides a comprehensive range of benefits to employees, including:

  • Medical care: The ESIS provides comprehensive medical care to insured persons and their dependents. This includes in-patient and out-patient treatment, diagnostic tests, and medicines.
  • Cash benefits: The ESIS provides cash benefits to insured persons in case of sickness, maternity, and disablement. These benefits are payable at a rate of 70% of the insured person’s average daily wages.
