Introduction
The Kerala Social Security Mission’s Vayomithram project has emerged as a transformative initiative in providing healthcare and support services to the elderly population aged 65 years and above residing in Corporation/Municipal Areas of the state. With a focus on enhancing the well-being and quality of life of senior citizens, this project has played a vital role in ensuring accessible healthcare, social inclusion, and overall empowerment for the elderly in Kerala.
Overview of the Vayomithram Project
The Vayomithram project, implemented by the Kerala Social Security Mission (KSSM), aims to address the healthcare needs and support requirements of the elderly population in Corporation/Municipal Areas of Kerala. The project started its function on 2010-11 financial year in Kollam and Trivandrum Corporation and extended to 12 district head quarters in 11-12 financial year. As a part of extension of project 9 new projects were started in 12-13 financial year and 2 new projects in 13-14 year. (Total 25 projects)
KSSM has decided to start 9 more projects in the current financial year up on the priority of the basic support provided by the municipality. Marad (Ernakulam), Manjeri, Kottakkal (Malappuram), Vadakara (Calicut), Chalakkudy (Thrissur) municipalities has expressed their interest for the project.

a) Mobile clinic services.
Vayomitram provides free medicine by organizing mobile clinics in neighboring areas in the area. There are no economic criteria to benefit from the service. Each mobile unit includes one doctor, one nurse and one JPHN.
b) Palliative care services
This service is intended to provide palliative care to bedridden patients in the project area. Specially trained nurses and JPHNs are available at all times.
c) Support Service
Vayomitram Coordinator provides support services to disadvantaged seniors in the area. Old age can benefit from the help of the Vayomitram office.
d) Other services.
Special medical camps are organized in the project area for the elderly (eye camps, etc.)
Unique entertainment programs such as Sallapam, Snehayathra are made mainly for destitute people in nursing homes and loanomitram recipients.
Grant programs have been made possible with the help of NGOs and regional organizations. Lead special day programs (health and fitness related) in the area.
A consultation service is provided by loanomitram coordinators with referrals from mobile clinic doctors.
Vayomitram’s active involvement in aging-related social issues in the region. (Rehabilitation, etc.).
